Store employee accused of stealing winning tickets

RENSSELAER — A convenience store employee was arrested last month after allegedly stealing more than $1,000 worth of lottery tickets from the business where she worked.

Kelly Woodcox, 56, of Rensselaer, is accused of taking lottery tickets from a store in the 700 block of South College Avenue on Jan. 22. She was charged with a Level 6 felony theft count and a misdemeanor for unlawful purchase of lottery tickets by an employee.

According to the Rensselaer Police Department, officers learned of the alleged theft after speaking with store management. Security footage from early January reportedly showed Woodcox removing lottery tickets and scanning them to determine whether they were winning tickets.

Police said Woodcox discarded the non-winning tickets while keeping those identified as winners.

When she returned to work on Jan. 23, Woodcox was confronted by store management and a Rensselaer police officer. Authorities said she admitted to taking the tickets and was taken into custody.

Woodcox was transported to the Jasper County Jail. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
