CUMBERLAND, Md. — A 53-year-old woman from Elkins, West Virginia, is in custody after Maryland police discovered a large quantity of methamphetamine during a traffic stop Saturday night.
According to the Cumberland Police Department, an officer stopped a vehicle on Interstate 68 westbound around 8:17 p.m. The driver, identified as Kelly Jean Channell, was found to have an active federal warrant issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF).
A police K-9 unit was deployed and alerted officers to the presence of drugs. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, police found a significant amount of suspected methamphetamine along with multiple other controlled dangerous substances (CDS) and drug paraphernalia.
Channell was arrested on the following charges:
Possession with intent to distribute controlled dangerous substances
Possession of a large amount of CDS
Four counts of CDS possession (not cannabis)
Possession of drug paraphernalia
She was transported to Central Booking and is currently being held at the Allegany County Detention Center, where the federal warrant is acting as a detainer. A bond hearing is pending.
