DAVENPORT, Iowa – A Davenport man has been arrested and charged with felony second-degree theft after police say he deposited stolen cell phones into an ecoATM in exchange for cash.
According to a criminal complaint, Kashosi Dedieu, 22, went to the ecoATM kiosk at NorthPark Mall on May 4 at approximately 12:22 p.m. and deposited six cell phones into the machine. Dedieu used his personal identification at the kiosk, which captured both a photograph of his driver’s license and images of him during the transaction.
Investigators later determined that four of the six phones Dedieu deposited were stolen during a robbery of a Verizon Wireless store at 898 Middle Road on May 5 around 11:25 a.m. A search warrant was executed at a home in connection with that robbery and another in the Davenport area. Police found Dedieu at the residence.
After being read his Miranda rights, Dedieu agreed to speak with officers. He admitted that he received the phones from someone at the house and took them to the ecoATM. Dedieu said he gave the cash to the individual who provided the phones and that the person admitted the phones were stolen, saying they had “come up on them.”
The total value of the stolen phones was estimated at over $1,500 but under $10,000.
Dedieu was arrested and later released on a secured $5,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 23.
