A woman from Horseheads, New York, has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of funds from a local nonprofit organization, according to the New York State Police.
Authorities said Karen Curtis, 58, was charged on March 9 with third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony. The investigation began on February 13 after members of the nonprofit reported suspected fraudulent activity involving the organization’s treasurer.
An internal audit revealed that more than $11,000 had allegedly been taken through unauthorized checks and credit card transactions dating back to 2023.
Curtis voluntarily appeared at the State Police barracks in Horseheads on March 9, where she was arrested and processed without incident.
She was later arraigned in Big Flats Town Court and released on her own recognizance. Curtis is scheduled to return to court on April 6 at 2:30 p.m.
Officials said the investigation into the alleged theft remains ongoing.
