Two senior citizens — Karamchand (62) and Shravan Kumar (58) — were arrested for snatching a gold chain from a woman during her morning walk in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. What makes this case extraordinary is the pair’s extensive criminal history dating back nearly three decades.
According to police, the suspects — both residents of Haridwar — arrived in Moradabad last Friday and checked into a hotel in Budh Bazaar. After scouting the area, they identified Avantika Colony as their target zone. On Saturday around 6:30 AM, they snatched a gold chain from Anita Kaushik, a woman in her 50s walking through the Civil Lines area.
Their age worked in their favor, as it diverted suspicion. “They didn’t fit the typical profile of chain snatchers, making it harder to track them,” said SP (City) Ranvijay Singh. With the help of city-wide CCTV surveillance and extended tracking into Haridwar, police identified and arrested the duo, recovering the stolen chain, their getaway scooter, and a firearm.
Investigations revealed Karamchand has 29 criminal cases since 1997 and was previously arrested in 2019 by Muzaffarnagar police. Shravan Kumar has 12 cases to his name. Most of their victims were elderly, highlighting their consistent targeting pattern.
Both have now been sent to jail, and the police team that solved the case has been awarded a Rs10,000 cash reward.
