In a major breakthrough, the Kapurthala police have arrested three suspects and recovered Rs28.67 lakh cash, two pistols, and two vehicles linked to the sensational HDFC Bank robbery in Rehana Jattan village, Phagwara on May 30.
SSP Gaurav Toora confirmed the arrests during a press briefing. The robbery unfolded when three masked men stormed the bank branch, escaping with a large sum and prompting an extensive manhunt across the state.
The case, registered at Rawalpindi Police Station, was aggressively pursued under senior officers SP Prabhjot Singh Virk and SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti. Dedicated teams, led by DSPs Bharat Bhushan and Parminder Singh, along with Inspector Jarnail Singh and SI Major Singh, coordinated the investigation.
The first arrest occurred on June 7, when police detained Gurmindar Singh from Kahalwa village, Kartarpur. Officers recovered Rs13.10 lakh, a .32-bore pistol, and cartridges from him. Gurmindar confessed and named accomplices Navjot Singh (Kahalwa) and Jorawar Singh Sodhi (Dhaliwal Qadian).
Following leads, police arrested the duo in Mathura, seizing a white Innova Crysta (Punjab 08 FB 0039) and Rs2.02 lakh stolen cash. Further searches uncovered an unregistered white Verna car, Rs13.55 lakh more cash, and another .32-bore pistol.
Police identified Gurmindar as the mastermind responsible for planning, recruiting, and logistics. SSP Toora lauded the police for their precision and coordination across districts and states.
The recovered cash, weapons, and vehicles have reassured the community of the police’s commitment to justice. The investigation is ongoing, with further arrests possible.
