SARDIS, Ala. (WSFA) – An 18-year-old suspect is in custody in connection to a shooting that injured six people in Sardis on Saturday, March 1.
Authorities identified the suspect as Kanye Benjamin, who was arrested on March 6, according to court documents. However, officials did not immediately confirm his arrest.
On March 2, District Attorney Robert Turner Jr. stated in a Facebook post that although no fatalities occurred, teenagers were among both the victims and the suspects.
Benjamin now faces six counts of attempted murder and is currently being held without bond, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Mike Granthum revealed that an investigation determined all 11 recovered bullets were fired from the same AK-47 rifle, which was used by the suspect. However, authorities noted that the gun was not registered to Benjamin.
According to law enforcement, Benjamin claimed the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation.
A preliminary hearing for Benjamin is scheduled for March 27 as the investigation continues.
