Kanpur Police on Tuesday busted a transnational gang accused of stealing 113 mobile phones worth around Rs60 lakh from a retail outlet in the Govind Nagar area. Authorities said the gang allegedly sold the stolen devices in neighbouring Nepal.
Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal stated that the theft occurred on December 7 at Krishna Mobile Shop, owned by Neeraj Balecha. The stolen phones included premium foldable models and high-end iPhones. An FIR was filed at Govind Nagar police station, after which three special teams were formed to investigate the case.
The investigation spanned 17 days, with police conducting raids across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Nepal, including cities such as Lucknow, Kanpur, Patna, East Champaran, and Birgunj in Nepal. “The recovery was eventually made from Nepal. Our team faced attacks during the operation but successfully completed it,” Lal added.
Five accused have been arrested so far: Krishna Nepali from Parasa village, Nepal; Sohail Ahmad from Kanpur; and three residents of East Champaran in Bihar. Authorities noted that the village in Bihar is heavily involved in organised mobile thefts.
The gang is suspected of carrying out similar crimes across Mumbai, Haryana, NCR, Prayagraj, and Ayodhya. Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna announced a cash reward of Rs1 lakh for the police team responsible for the successful operation.
