by Ananya Mehta

The cyber-crime branch in Kanpur has busted a gang and arrested four individuals, including a woman, involved in frauds conducted via messaging apps using Pakistani IP addresses.

DCP (Crime) Shravan Kumar Singh stated that information was received through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre’s Pratibimb portal about a Kanpur mobile number being linked to crimes in multiple locations.

The gang reportedly duped people by posing as customs or police officers using a deactivated mobile number routed through Islamabad, Pakistan. The deactivated number displayed a police profile picture, and no alert was generated since it was operated directly on the telecom service provider’s system.

Police arrested the following accused:

Kamlesh Kumar Gautam – Bahraich

Vikas Gautam – Bahraich

Rakhi Mishra – Lakhimpur Kheri

Deepak Sharma

During the arrests, authorities seized mobile phones, documents, and other items. The search for additional gang members is ongoing.
