The Kannur City Cyber Police have arrested Jivan Ram, a 28-year-old from Ludhiana, Punjab, for allegedly extorting Rs10.5 lakh from a female doctor in Thalassery, Kerala. The accused reportedly threatened the victim with a “digital arrest” to coerce her into transferring the funds.
The fraud occurred on November 30, 2025, when Ram and accomplices posed as CBI officers from Mumbai during a WhatsApp video call. Claiming the doctor was involved in a money laundering case, they convinced her to transfer money across multiple accounts, which Ram later withdrew via cheques.
Under the guidance of Police Commissioner Nidhinraj P, the local cyber police tracked Ram to a village in Ludhiana. Despite frequent location changes and difficult weather conditions in Punjab, officers successfully apprehended him after a five-day surveillance operation.
This arrest highlights the growing sophistication of cyber extortion scams and the effectiveness of targeted surveillance operations by Indian police.
