Kamla Nagar police have arrested three notorious thieves linked to multiple jewellery thefts from women passengers traveling in auto-rickshaws. The recovered stolen items include a gold mangalsutra, gold bracelet, gold earrings, and a pair of silver anklets, with an estimated value of nearly Rs 3 lakh. The auto-rickshaw used in the crimes was also seized.
The arrested suspects are Nasir (55), alias Suitcase or Nasiruddin, a habitual criminal with a criminal record spanning 45 cases including theft, assault, and murder; Matiin (45), the auto-rickshaw driver and resident of Kabitpura; and Abdul Kalam Ansari (33) of Aishbagh. Another accused, Majid from Putli Ghar, remains absconding and has a prior record of 15 offenses.
The breakthrough in the case came when SHO Nirupa Pandey and her team received a tip-off and examined footage from over 200 CCTV cameras. On May 16, complainant Durga Dwivedi filed an FIR after discovering that gold and silver ornaments worth approximately Rs 3.5 lakh were missing from her trolley suitcase following an auto-rickshaw ride near Rani Kamlapati Station.
Police tracked a suspicious auto-rickshaw near the Sindhi Colony bus stand. Upon questioning, driver Matiin gave inconsistent responses and was taken into custody. He later confessed to the theft along with his accomplices Nasir, Majid, and Abdul Kalam Ansari. Subsequently, police arrested Nasir and Abdul Kalam Ansari and recovered stolen jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the absconding accused Majid as investigations continue.
