A habitual thief, Karan alias Cheeku, aged 22, was arrested by Kalka police with stolen property worth approximately Rs 32 lakh recovered. The recovered loot includes 300 grams of gold, 186 grams of silver, and Rs 1.2 lakh in cash.
A resident of Upper Mohalla, Kalka, Karan is a repeat offender with two earlier theft cases registered against him in 2022 and 2024. He was currently out on bail at the time of the latest incident. Despite having studied only up to Class IX, he has been involved in multiple criminal activities.
The recent theft came to light after Harvinder Singh, a local resident, lodged a complaint. On April 14, while Singh and his family were away in Paonta Sahib, his house was broken into. Upon returning, he discovered that his cupboard had been forced open and valuable jewellery along with cash was missing. Notably, this was the second time the same house had been targeted by the same accused.
A case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — Sections 305 and 331(3). The police immediately began an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage and collecting evidence from the scene.
Head Constable Kanwarpal Singh received a tip-off about the suspect being spotted near the vegetable market in Kalka. A swift raid was conducted on May 15, leading to Karan’s arrest. He was produced before a court on May 16, and police secured a three-day remand.
During interrogation, Karan confessed to the crime. Based on his statement, police recovered all the stolen items.
