A 37-year-old man with a criminal record, Kalel Jorell Martínez Bristol, turned himself in on Friday and has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of a U.S. tourist in Puerto Rico.
The victim, 25-year-old Kevin Mares from New York, was an innocent bystander when he was struck by a bullet early Sunday while at a nightspot with friends in La Perla, a seaside community near Old San Juan. Authorities say Martínez Bristol pulled out a gun and fired during an argument with others near Mares. Two other individuals, siblings from La Perla, were also injured in the incident.
Martínez Bristol is currently held on an $800,000 bond. Defense attorney Pedro Rivera expressed surprise that attempted murder charges were not filed, raising questions about the case.
La Perla, once known as Puerto Rico’s largest heroin distribution point, has become a popular tourist destination after being featured in the hit song “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. However, violent incidents still occur.
In February 2023, three tourists were stabbed after filming inside the community, and in April 2024, another tourist was killed and his body set on fire after an attack following a drug purchase.
The investigation into Mares’ killing continues as authorities seek justice for the victim.
