The Wayanad Cyber Police have arrested a 29-year-old man from Kerala’s Alappuzha district for creating and circulating a misleading AI-generated video that falsely depicted a zipline accident involving a woman and a child. The video, which went viral online, caused widespread panic.
The accused has been identified as K Ashkar (29), residing at Thaivelikkam House, Thiruvambady, Alappuzha. Police took him into custody on Monday evening after tracing the source of the viral clip.
Investigators revealed that Ashkar used an AI tool to fabricate visuals showing a woman and child experiencing a mishap while riding a zipline. He shared the video on his social media account, ‘Ashkar Ali Reacts’, which quickly gained traction and sparked fear among viewers.
Following the viral circulation of the video, the Wayanad Cyber Police registered an FIR on October 30 and began a detailed investigation that led them to Alappuzha. Officials noted that Ashkar has multiple previous criminal cases, including attempt to murder, assault, and drug-related offences.
The District Police Chief of Wayanad emphasized that strict action will be taken against individuals who create or spread misleading AI content that incites fear, damages public trust, or impacts local businesses and the economy.
Authorities continue to monitor social media platforms to prevent the dissemination of similar hoaxes in the future.
