A 27-year-old woman, Jyoti Mohan Bhanushali, was arrested for robbing more than Rs 1.5 crore worth of jewelry from the residence of her sister’s father-in-law in Palghar district, Maharashtra. The woman disguised herself as a man to gain entry into the house located in Manickpur, Vasai area, on Monday afternoon.

Posing as a potential buyer interested in the property, Jyoti managed to enter the house of the 66-year-old man who lived alone. She took him to the toilet under the pretext of inspection, locked him inside, and fled with 1.4 kg of gold ornaments and 2.3 kg of silver items valued at Rs 1,50,84,050, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Madan Ballal.

Following a complaint by the victim, the police registered an FIR for theft, robbery, and wrongful confinement. The investigation involved examining around 75 to 80 CCTV footage clips. One clip showed a man carrying the stolen items to a hidden location, where a woman later collected them.

Based on surveillance, intelligence inputs, and a tip-off regarding a relative of the victim in Gujarat, the crime branch, along with Navsari police, arrested Jyoti from Gujarat late Monday night.

During interrogation, Jyoti confessed to planning and executing the robbery herself, knowing the victim lived alone. All stolen jewelry was recovered, and further investigations are ongoing.
