by Sophia Bennett

A Florida man was arrested on Wednesday after traveling to Maine to carry out a classic “grandparent scam,” targeting an elderly Standish resident for $9,500.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, 48-year-old Julius Bigboro, of Miami, flew to Boston before driving to Standish, where he posed as the victim’s grandson. He claimed he had been arrested by the Scarborough Police Department and needed money for bail.

Believing the story, the victim handed over $9,500 in cash. Shortly afterward, authorities apprehended Bigboro.

Bigboro is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Portland on Friday.
