COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Former college football standout Julian Fleming has been charged with homicide by motor vehicle in connection with the May 2025 ATV crash that killed his girlfriend, Alyssa Boyd, authorities announced.
Fleming, 24, was driving an ATV in Columbia Township on May 23 when it crashed, killing Boyd, 23, who was riding as a passenger. She was pronounced dead at the scene, while Fleming sustained serious injuries.
Neither was wearing protective gear at the time of the crash.
According to defense attorneys, Fleming swerved to avoid a deer before the vehicle overturned. However, a toxicology report showed the former wide receiver’s blood alcohol content was between 0.10 and 0.16, well above Pennsylvania’s legal limit of 0.08.
In addition to homicide by vehicle, Fleming faces DUI charges.
“Regardless of whether there was alcohol involved or not, this was an unavoidable event,” Fleming’s attorney told NBC News. “He hasn’t done anything wrong.”
Fleming, once ranked ESPN’s No. 1 college football recruit, played four seasons at Ohio State before transferring to Penn State for his final year. Despite his college success, he went undrafted in 2024, and a contract offer from the Green Bay Packers was withdrawn after he failed a physical exam.
The former wide receiver surrendered to Pennsylvania State Police on Wednesday and was released after posting a $75,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later this month.
