Juan Reyes-Rivas Charged with Multiple Child Sexual Assaults in McCullom Lake

Man Detained Pretrial Over Allegations of Abuse Starting When Victim Was 6

McCullom Lake — Juan Reyes-Rivas, 36, has been charged with multiple counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under 13, stemming from allegations of abuse that began when the victim was just 6 years old.

At his initial court appearance in McHenry County, Judge Cynthia Lamb ordered Reyes-Rivas held in pretrial detention, citing the serious threat he poses to the victim and other minors. Reyes-Rivas faces three Class X felony counts and additional criminal sexual assault charges. Each Class X felony carries a potential sentence of six to 60 years.

Assistant State’s Attorney Garrett Miller detailed that the assaults continued until recently, with the victim disclosing the abuse to a teacher and a forensic interviewer at the Child Advocacy Center. Miller described the victim’s graphic and detailed account of the assaults and the defendant’s threats to keep her silent.

Reyes-Rivas allegedly assaulted the child when intoxicated, repeatedly promising the abuse would stop but breaking those promises. The defendant reportedly warned the child he would take away her tablet if she told anyone.

Defense attorney David Geisinger requested Reyes-Rivas be released under court supervision with conditions, highlighting his lack of recent criminal history, employment as a landscaper, and low risk score in a dangerousness evaluation. However, Judge Lamb emphasized there is no condition that can mitigate the threat Reyes-Rivas poses.

Reyes-Rivas is next scheduled to appear in court on May 21.
