A 47-year-old woman, Joyce Reed, has been arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a man inside her vehicle in a Northport neighborhood.
Police responded to reports of a shooting around 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday in the 11400 block of Fairwood Avenue in the Huntington Place area. When officers arrived, they found 28-year-old Hermaine Dashun Witherspoon suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital but died shortly after arrival.
Investigators believe Reed and Witherspoon, a Tuscaloosa resident, knew each other, though the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear. According to law enforcement, evidence indicates that Reed was standing outside her car when she fired multiple shots at Witherspoon, who was seated inside.
“There was no evidence that Mr. Witherspoon was armed prior to being shot,” said Northport Police.
Reed has been booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail and is being held without bond on a charge of capital murder.
This marks the 11th homicide investigated by the Violent Crimes Unit in Tuscaloosa County so far in 2025.
