FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas — A 21-year-old Austin man was arrested after authorities say he stole copper and aluminum materials from a Schulenburg property early Nov. 5.

According to Sheriff Keith Korenek, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a theft in progress around 3:16 a.m. at 1513 U.S. Highway 77 North. Schulenburg Police arrived first and detained Jovany Mendez-Salazar, who was seen walking around the property.

Deputies discovered multiple air conditioning coils, radiators, and other copper and aluminum items inside a truck at the scene. Mendez-Salazar admitted he had driven by, noticed the materials, and “decided to take them,” officials said.

He was arrested on a felony charge of theft of materials containing copper or aluminum and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.
