SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — What began as a routine call led deputies to uncover a months-long chop-shop operation involving stolen golf carts, equipment, and tools, authorities reported.
According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home on Clarke Street where 40-year-old Joshua Harrell had been squatting. Investigators found multiple stolen golf carts, a UTV, and thousands of dollars’ worth of professional-grade tools.
Some of the recovered tools were reportedly stolen from the Waterfront Inn. In November, a $5,000 motor was taken from a brand-new golf cart near Sumter Landing. Authorities believe the operation may be linked to thefts at multiple locations across Sumter County.
Harrell faces charges of operating a chop shop and grand theft. Deputies said additional charges could be filed as recovered parts are traced back to their rightful owners.
Neighbors expressed shock at the discovery. “I don’t think it’s normal. I don’t think people would have to worry that that would be a normal thing going on,” said Kerstin Schnider. Terry Hawk added, “It doesn’t surprise me. I am glad he was caught.”
The sheriff’s office said the alleged operation likely ran for months. Anyone who may have been a victim or recognizes recovered parts is urged to contact Crimeline as the investigation continues.
