DOVER, Del. – A man is behind bars after being caught inside a local church just hours after an attempted burglary, according to Dover police.

On Tuesday afternoon, officers responded to a burglary report at Holy Cross Church, located at 631 South State Street. Investigators say a man unlawfully entered the church and tried to steal money from collection boxes before fleeing the scene.

Through their investigation, officers identified the suspect as 42-year-old Joseph Skowronski, who already had a no-contact order from a previous incident involving the same church.

Around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, officers conducting a property check at Holy Cross found an open door. Upon entering, they discovered Skowronski inside and took him into custody.

He now faces several charges:

Third-degree burglary

Second-degree criminal trespassing

Attempted theft

Two counts of non-compliance with bond

Skowronski is currently being held at SCI on a $6,000 secured bail.
