THOMPSON, N.D. (Valley News Live) — A wanted fugitive was taken into custody on Sunday, March 2, after a standoff with law enforcement at an apartment in Thompson, North Dakota.
The Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office attempted to serve an arrest warrant on 44-year-old Joseph Arthur Rud at 528 4th St #10 for violating conditions of bond. Deputies confirmed Rud was inside the apartment but refused to surrender, prompting officers to breach the door.
Inside, deputies discovered an open gun safe with an empty rifle case and a box of ammunition. They soon heard Rud barricading himself in a bedroom, leading them to call in the Regional SWAT team, UAS, Bomb, and Negotiations units.
After repeated commands, Rud exited the apartment and was taken into custody without incident. Authorities recovered a loaded handgun from the residence.
Rud was transported to the Regional Correctional Center and booked on his felony warrant, a theft-related Failure to Appear charge, preventing arrest on a felony charge, and felon in possession of a firearm.
The investigation remains ongoing.
