ORISKANY, N.Y. – A man from Oriskany, Joseph Mendoza, was arrested following a series of evasion attempts after a domestic investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began on December 12, 2024, when deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute involving Mendoza. Authorities allege that Mendoza committed multiple offenses against the victim, leading deputies to begin a search for him. Despite numerous attempts to locate him, Mendoza evaded law enforcement, and an arrest warrant was subsequently issued.
During the search, Mendoza allegedly came close to striking a deputy with his vehicle and fled from a nearby police agency, endangering both himself and the public. On January 15, Mendoza became the subject of a mental hygiene law complaint after he made suicidal remarks to a family member, prompting another round of search efforts.
After several hours of searching, Mendoza was eventually found and taken into custody. Upon the officers’ attempt to arrest him, Mendoza resisted, refusing to comply with verbal commands and failing to show both hands as instructed. In response, a Taser was deployed to assist in his arrest.
Mendoza now faces a variety of charges, including two counts of criminal contempt, aggravated harassment, stalking, harassment, and aggravated family offense. Additionally, he is charged with obstructing governmental administration and reckless endangerment for his actions while evading capture.
He was taken to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Building for processing. After undergoing a medical evaluation following the Taser deployment, Mendoza was found to have no injuries. He was later transferred to the Oneida County Jail.
