ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. (7News) – Maryland State Police arrested Jose Gregario Cruz-Mendoza, 45, from Lanham, Maryland, after multiple reports of shots being fired from his vehicle on Interstate 97 in Anne Arundel County Sunday afternoon.
Around 4:30 p.m., troopers received several calls reporting gunfire coming from a white Ford Excursion traveling on MD Route 97 and later on U.S. Route 50 near Annapolis.
With assistance from the Anne Arundel County Police and Sheriff’s Office, officers located the vehicle westbound on U.S. Route 50 near I-97 and initiated a traffic stop.
Police said Cruz-Mendoza was the sole occupant and driver. During the stop, officers repeatedly instructed him to show his hands and observed him attempting to load what appeared to be a handgun.
Despite signs of impairment, officers safely apprehended Cruz-Mendoza without incident.
In the vehicle, police discovered a Highpoint 9mm handgun with an altered serial number, approximately 75 spent shell casings, and 247 live rounds.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
Cruz-Mendoza now faces several charges, including reckless endangerment, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, and driving while impaired. He is currently held without bail.
