DICKINSON COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) – A Georgia couple is facing serious charges after allegedly scamming Upper Peninsula businesses out of more than $21,000 through the use of fraudulent credit cards.
According to a press release from the Michigan State Police (MSP) on Tuesday, 34-year-old Jonathon Daniels of Lithonia, Georgia, and 28-year-old Shanee Clark of Covington, Georgia, were arraigned last Friday in Dickinson County District Court.
Each is charged with the following:
One count of Larceny by Conversion (more than $1,000 but less than $20,000)
Three counts of Financial Transaction Device – Uttering and Publishing
Three counts of Financial Transaction Device – Possession of a Fraudulent Device
The arrests followed a joint investigation between the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post and the Iron Mountain Police Department. The investigation was initiated after a local business reported that two individuals had used fake credit cards to purchase merchandise worth thousands across store locations in Menominee, Dickinson, and Iron counties.
Authorities later traced the suspects’ vehicle to the Auburn Hills area in Lower Michigan. A “Be on the Lookout” (B.O.L.) alert was issued, and shortly after, Auburn Hills Police located the suspects and their vehicle at the Great Lakes Crossing Mall. Both individuals were arrested and taken to the Dickinson County Jail.
Daniels was arraigned as a habitual offender with bond set at $30,000 (10% allowed), while Clark received a $20,000 bond under similar conditions.
Their next court appearance is scheduled for June 5 in Dickinson County District Court.
