Lunglei Police in Mizoram have arrested Johny Rosangliana, a 41-year-old man, in connection with the murder of 73-year-old K Vanlalngaii, who was found dead in her rented home on December 31. The case was solved within 24 hours, officials said.
According to Lunglei SP J Lalmuankima, Rosangliana, a resident of Bazar Veng in Lunglei town and allegedly a drug addict, was the prime suspect. He was apprehended around 9 pm on Thursday and confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The SP stated that the suspect left almost no crucial evidence at the scene, aside from signs of a break-in, suggesting that the motive may have been robbery. Vanlalngaii had received at least Rs 20,000 as a Christmas gift from donors. Preliminary investigations indicated that the cause of death could have been a blow from a blunt object or injuries sustained during a struggle.
Given the limited evidence, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the homicide. The team quickly achieved a breakthrough, leading to the suspect’s arrest within a day. Police noted injuries to Vanlalngaii’s neck and the left side of her head during the inquest.
Vanlalngaii, who had been living alone in an Anganwadi building rent-free due to financial hardship, was laid to rest at her son’s residence in Luangmual following a post-mortem examination.
The case has been registered at Lunglei Police Station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The suspect was produced before a district court and remanded to judicial custody at Lunglei district jail. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the motive and collect additional evidence.
