The Lagos State Police Command arrested 28-year-old John Samuel, 37 days after he allegedly shot a businessman and robbed him of a gold necklace in Ikeja.
Samuel, recently released from prison after serving six years for armed robbery, reportedly returned to crime immediately upon his release.
On August 18, 2025, Samuel allegedly shot businessman Gbenga Obama on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, injuring him before snatching his gold necklace and valuables in broad daylight. CCTV footage shows Samuel firing a pistol at the victim while an accomplice waited on a motorcycle nearby. The injured victim has since been treated and discharged from the hospital.
Police tracked and apprehended Samuel on September 19, 2025, at a hideout in Epe. Lagos Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the suspect admitted selling the stolen jewelry for N4 million. Investigations are ongoing to capture the remaining gang members.
Adebisi described Samuel as notorious for shooting victims before stealing their possessions and said he will be prosecuted after investigations. Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh praised the operatives for the arrest and reassured Lagos residents of their safety.
Meanwhile, in Borno State, police arrested five suspects for stealing 7,871 units of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) intended for malnourished children. The Rapid Response Squad intercepted two vehicles carrying the stolen supplies at Maiduguri between April and June 2025.
Police spokesperson ASP Nahum Daso confirmed the suspects confessed and have been charged in court. The recovered RUTF was handed over to the state government for proper distribution to hospitals and IDP camps. Daso urged the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.
