Former Wimbledon and England footballer John Fashanu has been arrested in Nigeria over an alleged land dispute, facing charges including criminal conspiracy, threat to life, intimidation, trespass, and obtaining by false pretenses.
The 62-year-old, who now resides in Nigeria, vehemently denies the accusations and has launched a £100,000 lawsuit against the police, claiming he was wrongfully detained alongside his wife, Vivian, and lawyer, Chinyere Chigbu.
According to reports, Fashanu had agreed to sell a 22-acre property for over £500,000. However, when he discovered that the buyers had sent workers to build a perimeter fence on the land without his knowledge, he and his lawyer went to investigate.
Fashanu claims that upon arriving at the site, they found the workers being protected by police officers. When he and his lawyer went to the police station to resolve the issue, they were arrested and detained.
The former footballer alleged that he was subjected to “inhuman treatment” for around three hours on December 16, with further restrictions on his personal liberty continuing until December 19.
Despite the legal turmoil, Fashanu remains firm in his denial of all allegations and is pushing forward with his legal action against the police.
