GREENVILLE, N.C. — A 44-year-old Greenville man, John Christopher Smith, has been charged with ten counts of animal cruelty, including violations related to required vaccinations for dogs, cats, or ferrets.

Smith was arrested by the Greenville Police Department on Tuesday, June 3, at a residence on the 200 block of Lindbeth Drive.

According to warrants, Smith intentionally deprived adult dogs and puppies — ranging in age from one week to three months — of necessary sustenance, including food, water, or other essential care.

Authorities say the living conditions were severe enough to merit multiple charges of animal cruelty. He was released after posting a $10,000 bond.

Smith is scheduled to appear in court at the Pitt County Courthouse on July 21, 2025.

The investigation remains ongoing, and animal welfare officials are monitoring the situation to ensure proper care for any surviving animals.
