NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning on I-24 East near the Bell Road exit claimed the life of a 51-year-old Murfreesboro woman. Authorities have charged 28-year-old John Baudendistel with vehicular homicide by intoxication in connection with the fatal accident.
The crash, involving four vehicles, occurred around 4 a.m. Police report that the initial collision happened between a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek and a 2003 Honda Accord. Both drivers fled the scene on foot, with evidence suggesting alcohol use in both vehicles.
A secondary collision involved a Nissan Rogue, driven by Baudendistel, and a Nissan Sentra. The Sentra’s driver succumbed to injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Preliminary investigations indicate the Sentra driver was slowing to avoid the first crash when the secondary collision occurred.
Police observed signs of impairment in Baudendistel, including glossy, red eyes and slurred speech. He admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the crash, and officers found an open alcoholic beverage container in his vehicle. Baudendistel consented to a blood draw and has since been charged.
Baudendistel was released from jail on a $25,000 bond pending further court proceedings. Police continue notifying the victim’s family and investigating the full circumstances surrounding the accident.
