A shocking case of online matrimonial fraud has surfaced as Hyderabad police’s Cyber Crime Wing arrested Jogada Vamshi Krishna for allegedly defrauding a woman of nearly Rs11 lakh through a fake profile on Shaadi.com.
The victim, a practicing doctor from Hyderabad, was targeted through the platform’s premium Select Shaadi service, where the accused posed as “Harsha Cherukuri,” a fabricated identity meant to appear like a legitimate suitor.
Initially gaining the victim’s trust, Krishna claimed to be in financial trouble and manipulated her into transferring large amounts of money. The situation escalated when he allegedly used her personal content to blackmail and threaten her.
Upon investigation, police uncovered that Krishna had committed similar frauds in over 20 cases across multiple states, taking advantage of weak user verification on digital matchmaking platforms.
The case has sparked scrutiny of Shaadi.com’s legal responsibilities under the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, formulated under Section 79 of the IT Act, 2000.
Despite marketing profiles in the Select Shaadi tier as “verified”, Hyderabad police allege that no document-based verification was conducted. The platform’s relationship manager directly shared the fake profile with the victim, which enabled the fraud.
