Ji-Gwe-Mko Layton Charged with Highway Homicide in Ashwaubenon

18-year-old faces first-degree murder after shooting on I-41

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) — Ji-Gwe-Mko Layton, 18, of Nekoosa, has been formally charged with First Degree Intentional Homicide with Use of a Dangerous Weapon in connection with a fatal shooting on August 15 in Ashwaubenon.

Deputies responded to a crash on I-41 southbound near STH 172 eastbound. According to the criminal complaint, the victim was driving when Layton shot him in the head with a handgun, causing the crash. After the shooting, Layton was seen outside the vehicle carrying a large rifle.

A Brown County Sergeant who arrested Layton reported overhearing him admit to shooting and killing the victim. Layton claimed the victim “was acting like he was going to rob my safe while I was at work.”

The victim was found deceased inside the crashed pickup truck, with a Taurus Spectrum 380 handgun located at the driver’s side floorboard. A post-mortem report confirmed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.

During a court hearing on Tuesday, a competency hearing for Layton was scheduled for September 5 at 1:30 p.m. His bond remains set at $750,000.
