SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — A 41-year-old woman from rural Hull was cited around noon on Thursday, May 15, for fifth-degree theft at the Walmart in Sioux Center, according to local police.

Jessica Karina Jaquez Ortiz was observed by store personnel and law enforcement allegedly manipulating prices and improperly scanning merchandise during checkout. According to the Sioux Center Police Department, she marked down clothing prices herself and scanned only one of two items while placing both into her cart.

Walmart loss prevention staff told police this behavior had occurred over multiple visits, resulting in an estimated total loss of $163.

Fifth-degree theft is charged when the value of stolen goods is less than $300, making it the least severe theft charge under Iowa law.
