WINCHESTER, Va. – Jermaine Tyler Burke, 29, who had been on the run for over three years after skipping a court appearance, has been taken into custody following his recent arrest in Washington, D.C.
Burke was initially arrested on August 20, 2021, on charges of:
Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
Assault and battery
Seven counts of credit card larceny
After being granted bond, he was scheduled to appear in court on September 13, 2021, but failed to show up. A warrant was issued, and he remained at large until his capture this weekend.
Details of the 2021 Incident
According to court documents, Burke allegedly took a woman’s car without permission and failed to return it for over 24 hours. The vehicle contained:
The victim’s driver’s license
Her credit cards
Social Security cards belonging to her and her children
When Burke finally returned the car, he allegedly became violent, throwing the victim against a wall, punching her in the head, and assaulting her outside the home.
Arrest and Court Appearance
Burke was arrested in Washington, D.C., where he had been homeless for at least two years, according to court records. He was extradited back to Winchester, where he now faces an additional charge of failure to appear.
He appeared in Winchester General District Court on Thursday morning and is currently being held at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center.
