NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — On Monday, Nassau police announced the arrest of Jeremias Ferrufino-Rodriguez, 18, in connection with the fatal shooting of Jefferson Mancia-Fernandez, 19, in Hempstead on Saturday.
According to authorities, Ferrufino-Rodriguez fired a single shot from his car while Mancia-Fernandez was crossing the street at the intersection of West Graham Avenue and Peninsula Boulevard just after noon. The victim was shot in the chest and later died at a nearby hospital.
The two teens knew each other, and police described the incident as a targeted event resulting from previous friction between them. However, police clarified that they do not believe the shooting was gang-related.
Ferrufino-Rodriguez was arrested at his Hempstead home on Sunday and has been charged with murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
