South Berwick, ME – A South Berwick man has been arrested and charged with the murder of his girlfriend after a domestic dispute on Saturday evening.
Maine State Police say 43-year-old Jeremiah Godfrey called 911 around 8:44 p.m. to report an altercation at his home on Brattle Street. Godfrey told officers that he had been arguing with his girlfriend, 37-year-old Sherri Sweet, and that during the struggle, a gun was involved. He claimed Sweet was shot and was unresponsive.
Sweet was rushed to Portsmouth Regional Hospital but tragically died from a gunshot wound to the head around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday. The New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed the cause of death.
Godfrey was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murder. He is currently being held at the York County Jail.
Residents of South Berwick were left shaken by the tragic event. One local, David Yarian, expressed disbelief, calling the town “a great place to live” and emphasizing the sense of safety in the community.
