The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Ludhiana have arrested three members of an inter-state gang involved in stealing valuables from train passengers. The arrests follow a complaint filed by Arpana, a local resident whose family lost Rs23 lakh worth of gold jewellery while returning from a wedding in Bihar on May 30.
According to Inspector Palwinder Singh, in-charge of GRP Ludhiana, the victim’s family—including her son and daughter-in-law—was travelling back to Ludhiana by train when their bag containing the gold jewellery was stolen by unknown miscreants.
Treating the complaint with urgency, GRP teams launched an investigation, aided by intelligence inputs, which led to a raid and the arrest of three suspects within two weeks of the incident.
Two of the arrested men, both named Jatinder, are residents of Siahi village in Hisar district, Haryana. Their identities were confirmed during interrogation.
The accused confessed to being part of a larger gang operating across multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Jammu & Kashmir. Their primary targets were families travelling after weddings, likely to carry large amounts of gold and valuables.
Police have secured a three-day remand to interrogate the accused further and uncover their wider network and accomplices. Authorities also suspect connections to similar train theft cases in recent months.
Investigations are ongoing, and more arrests may follow.
