SAUSALITO, CA — A 35-year-old Fresno man has been arrested for allegedly scamming $25,000 from an elderly Sausalito resident and attempting to steal another $25,000 before being caught, police said.
Jasvir Singh was taken into custody on Thursday after the victim, suspicious during a second attempted payment, contacted local authorities.
According to Sausalito Police Capt. Brian Mather, the fraud began when the victim received a text message about a suspicious charge. The message directed her to call a phone number, where scammers claimed to represent Apple, Wells Fargo, and federal agencies.
The scammers told the victim her bank account was compromised and under federal investigation. She was advised to hand over $25,000 in cash to a courier who came to her home. The scammers claimed the money was needed to protect her funds and assist in recovering losses.
The fraud was nearly repeated when the victim prepared to deliver a second $25,000 payment. However, this time she contacted police, leading to Singh’s arrest during the scheduled pickup.
Singh was booked into Marin County Jail on charges of embezzlement from an elderly person and obtaining money by false pretenses. His bail was set at $50,000, and he has since been released pending a review by the District Attorney’s Office.
