MURRAY, Ky. (KFVS) — Former Murray High School teacher Jason Shelby was arrested on Wednesday, September 10, following allegations of sexual misconduct with a former student.
Shelby was taken into custody on a warrant charging him with third-degree rape and first-degree sexual abuse, and booked into the Calloway County Jail.
According to the Kentucky State Police (KSP), the investigation began in August 2018, after the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board reported possible inappropriate sexual relationships between Shelby and at least two students while he was employed at Murray High School.
Though allegations reportedly date back as far as 2005, the first official complaint to KSP wasn’t filed until 2018. Following the report, Shelby resigned from his teaching position in October 2018.
Authorities said a former student recently came forward, providing new information that led to an arrest warrant issued on September 9. The victim stated that she was involved in a sexual relationship with Shelby between 2008 and 2009, when she was 15 and 16 years old.
The case remains under investigation by state police.
