Jason Carter Pleads Guilty to First-Degree Assault in Troy Shooting

Rensselaer County DA announces guilty plea in June 2024 shooting

TROY, NY (WRGB) — Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly confirmed that 23-year-old Jason Carter of Troy has pled guilty to one count of Assault in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony. This charge is related to a shooting incident that occurred on June 19, 2024, as part of the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) Initiative.

Carter admitted to firing approximately seven shots into the side of a residence at 138 6th Avenue in Troy, using a pistol. One of the bullets struck a woman in the head as she sat on her couch with her fiancé. The victim, who suffered life-threatening injuries, was rushed to the hospital for immediate brain surgery to save her life.

Thanks to swift investigative work, Troy Police were able to identify Carter as the shooter. He was arrested within 12 hours of the incident.

Carter is scheduled for sentencing on July 16, 2025, with Judge Sober presiding over the case. Chief Assistant District Attorney Spencer Lane served as the prosecutor.
