Mecklenburg County, Va. (BTW21) — A man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting along Interstate 85 in late August has been taken into custody, Virginia State Police confirmed.
On August 28, troopers responded to a shooting on I-85 northbound near the five-mile marker in Mecklenburg County. Authorities discovered a Honda Civic that had crashed off the road into a culvert.
The vehicle’s driver, 20-year-old Hunter A. Bates of Colonial Heights, was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was transported to a local hospital and has since been released.
Investigators quickly identified Jason Allen Glidewell, II as a suspect and launched a search. On Wednesday evening around 6:02 p.m., an acquaintance informed a Virginia State Police senior special agent that Glidewell wished to surrender and was at the Meherrin River Regional Jail in Alberta.
With assistance from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the Town of Alberta Police Department, and VSP Area 22 troopers, Glidewell was arrested without incident.
He is currently held without bond at Meherrin River Regional Jail and faces charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony related to the fatal shooting.
VSP also confirmed that Glidewell has unrelated misdemeanor charges pending in Nottoway County.
Authorities located the vehicle Glidewell was believed to be driving at the time of the incident on Tuesday.
Glidewell is scheduled to appear in Mecklenburg County General District Court on Thursday morning. The investigation is ongoing.
