ALBUQUERQUE, NM — Jarrett Chacon, 27, was arrested Friday on charges of auto theft and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer, and is also facing charges in a 2023 homicide.
According to the Albuquerque Police Department, officers responded to a theft report around 2:18 p.m. in the 300 block of Dallas SE. A woman told police that Chacon, whom she had allowed to stay with her, had stolen her car. Officers later found the vehicle in the same area and arrested Chacon after he fled on foot into an alley.
The woman informed officers that Chacon had a warrant for an open count of murder in the April 4, 2023, killing of Larry Norsworthy, 60. In that case, Chacon is also charged with aggravated burglary.
Police say surveillance footage helped identify Chacon and a woman, Jasmine Trujillo, 30, in connection with the crime. On April 4, 2023, officers responded to an unattended death report in the 200 block of Charleston SE. Norsworthy was found deceased on his bathroom floor. Initially ruled an unattended death, the case was later classified as a homicide due to blunt trauma to the chest.
Witnesses told police they saw Trujillo and Chacon fleeing in the victim’s SUV. The vehicle and Norsworthy’s stolen bank cards were later found at an apartment near Monroe and San Mateo.
Investigators learned that just days before the murder, Norsworthy reported his SUV stolen by Trujillo, who had recently been evicted. According to witness statements, Trujillo allegedly said she and Chacon planned to force Norsworthy to reveal his bank codes so they could access his Social Security funds.
Neighbors also reported hearing a loud struggle the night before Norsworthy was found, including him yelling “Get off me, damn” before two people fled the scene.
During a 2023 jail interview, Trujillo told police Chacon “must have done it and not told her.”
Trujillo is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Her trial is scheduled to begin in September.
Chacon remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center.
