A Japanese national, Yokota Tetsuya, 39, has been arrested in Manila for his alleged involvement in a phishing scam targeting a victim in Japan. Tetsuya was apprehended by the Bureau of Immigration’s Fugitive Search Unit in Binondo on January 2.
The arrest comes after Japanese authorities issued an arrest warrant for Tetsuya, who is accused of defrauding a victim out of 2.75 million yen (approximately USD17,000) by making fraudulent phone calls and convincing the victim that transferring the right to enter a nursing home was a crime.
Tetsuya is currently detained at the BI facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, and will be deported following a deportation order from the BI’s board of commissioners. The Japanese national will be placed on the immigration blacklist and permanently banned from re-entering the Philippines.
BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado confirmed that Tetsuya would face repatriation proceedings after the necessary legal processes are completed.
