Jamisha Sylvain Arrested in Deerfield Beach Elder Scam

Woman accused of posing as caregiver to steal from seniors

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — Authorities have arrested a Deerfield Beach woman accused of targeting elderly residents by posing as a caregiver and stealing thousands of dollars from their bank accounts.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), Jamisha Shamari Sylvain, 26, allegedly gained access to senior living communities by claiming to provide in-home care. Once inside victims’ apartments, investigators say she stole debit cards and obtained personal banking information to withdraw money without authorization.

The investigation began in October after BSO received a report involving an elderly man at the B’nai B’rith apartments. Detectives said Sylvain convinced the victim she was a caregiver, entered his residence, and later withdrew approximately $1,600 using his bank card.

As the case progressed, detectives uncovered additional incidents involving similar tactics. In several cases, Sylvain allegedly told victims she had been assigned by their health insurance provider, using the claim to build trust. Authorities say she then persuaded seniors to share sensitive financial information, allowing her to drain their accounts.

Sylvain was arrested on December 19 and booked into the BSO Main Jail. She faces multiple charges, including occupied burglary, exploitation of an elderly person, criminal use of personal identification information, theft of a credit card, and grand theft involving a victim aged 65 or older.

Investigators believe more victims may exist and are urging anyone with information to contact law enforcement. Authorities also encourage families and caregivers to verify credentials, closely monitor financial accounts, involve trusted individuals in financial decisions, and report suspicious activity as soon as possible.
