Hooghly Police Bust Fraud Targeting 21 Women

The Hooghly Police (Rural) have arrested three men, including mastermind Jamir Abbas, for orchestrating a Rs3 crore matrimonial fraud that cheated at least 21 women over ten months.

The case began when a 29-year-old woman from Singur filed a complaint on May 29, alleging that she had been deceived by a man she met on a matrimonial website. Introducing himself as ‘Anupam Roy’, the man claimed to own a rice mill in Burdwan and fabricated emotional stories to win her trust. He later persuaded her to transfer money to “resolve tax issues” linked to a frozen bank account, promising repayment once the issue was resolved.

The victim eventually transferred Rs43 lakh before realizing she had been duped.

During the investigation, police first arrested Abhishek Roy (32), the holder of one of the accounts where the money was deposited. His confession led to the arrest of Zahid Abbas (41) and finally Jamir Abbas (31), the alleged mastermind. Jamir was traced to a resort in Mandarmani and taken into custody in late October.

According to investigators, the Abbas brothers, originally from Khanakul, used photos and videos of a South Indian model to create fake matrimonial profiles. They posed as affluent and well-educated grooms to lure women and their families into sending large sums of money.

The fraud spread across Burdwan, Howrah, Tarakeswar, and Delhi, amassing nearly Rs3 crore through emotional and financial manipulation.

Authorities have warned users of matrimonial platforms to stay vigilant, verify profiles thoroughly, and avoid sharing personal or financial details without proper background checks.
