Canterbury, NH — A Massachusetts man was arrested early Sunday morning after driving the wrong way on Interstate 93 while allegedly intoxicated and fleeing into nearby woods after his vehicle ran out of gas.
New Hampshire State Police say they received multiple calls around 12:15 a.m. about a Subaru Crosstrek traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-93 in Northfield. When troopers arrived, they found the vehicle abandoned on the left shoulder near the 50.6-mile marker in Canterbury.
The car, facing the wrong direction, was empty. A short search led troopers to a man hiding in the median’s tree line. He was identified as James McGillicuddy, 35, of Medford, Massachusetts.
Police say McGillicuddy had a cut above his right eye from a fall while running through the woods. He declined medical assistance at the scene.
McGillicuddy was taken into custody and charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Reckless Conduct. He is currently being held at the Merrimack County Jail under protective detention pending arraignment.
The incident occurred in Canterbury, located about 50 miles north of the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border, along the busy I-93 corridor.
