Baguiati police arrested IT employee Shyamcharan Das and his brother Ramcharan for stealing gold jewelry and cash worth Rs 5 lakh from Shyamcharan’s girlfriend’s residence in Deshabandhu Nagar. Taking advantage of the girlfriend’s business trip to Sikkim, Shyamcharan handed over the flat’s keys to Ramcharan, directing him exactly where the valuables were kept.
To avoid suspicion, Shyamcharan accompanied his girlfriend to Sikkim himself. When the theft was discovered on May 30, the victim initially suspected the building’s servants and filed an FIR. However, police reviewed CCTV footage and spotted Shyamcharan’s scooty at the scene, used by Ramcharan during the robbery.
Upon questioning, Shyamcharan confessed to masterminding the crime. He had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh from the victim and planned to sell the stolen jewelry to repay the loan and keep the remaining money. The brothers frequently visited the flat, so their involvement went unnoticed initially.
The stolen items included two necklaces, two bracelets, four earrings, four lockets, and Rs 60,000 in cash. Police successfully recovered all the gold and cash. Both brothers, natives of Heriya in East Midnapore, are now in police custody. The victim, in a relationship with Shyamcharan for two years, also hails from East Midnapore.
