YAKIMA, Wash. — Authorities have arrested 21-year-old Isreal Barriga Vargas in connection with the weekend shooting death of 18-year-old Salvador Granillo, a senior at Garfield High School in Seattle.
Barriga Vargas was apprehended on Monday around 2:15 p.m. at a residence on South 90th Avenue in Yakima. The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, along with Yakima Police and other local agencies, surrounded the home and used a loudspeaker to contact the suspect. He surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody without incident.
According to law enforcement, the shooting occurred early Sunday morning at a party on the 1500 block of South Keys Road. Officials say an altercation between Barriga Vargas and Granillo escalated, ending with Granillo being shot once in the chest.
Deputies were notified of a gunshot victim arriving at MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital around 2:00 a.m., where Granillo was later pronounced dead. The Yakima County Coroner’s Office confirmed the cause of death as a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Barriga Vargas has been booked into the Yakima County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
Garfield High School students held a candlelight vigil in Granillo’s memory earlier today. The Razas Unidas Club is organizing a flower collection event tomorrow to honor their classmate.
