Ira Cunningham Arrested After Three-Week Manhunt

Facing multiple charges, including robbery and drug possession

Joliet, IL — Ira Cunningham, 45, was taken into custody on Saturday at 3:11 p.m. following a traffic stop on McDonough Street. His arrest comes three weeks after an alleged violent robbery at a Holiday Inn parking lot near Houbolt Road, according to the Joliet Police Department.

March 1 Attack & Robbery
On March 1, police responded to a report of a woman being attacked in the Holiday Inn parking lot at 1471 Rock Creek Boulevard. The victim suffered multiple injuries and was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.

Cunningham is accused of assaulting the victim and stealing her purse, credit cards, cell phone, and backpack before fleeing the scene.

Police Pursuit & Arrest
March 12: Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Cunningham.

March 19: Cunningham fled from officers during a traffic stop on Route 59, but police chose not to pursue.

March 23: Officers stopped Cunningham’s vehicle in the 1700 block of McDonough Street and discovered suspected crack cocaine in the car.

Charges Against Cunningham
Cunningham is currently being held at Will County Jail, facing multiple charges:

Robbery

Four counts of aggravated battery

Four counts of domestic battery

Parole violation warrant

Fleeing or attempting to elude police

Possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver

Driving with a suspended license

Police Statement
Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English confirmed that Cunningham’s arrest resulted from three separate incidents and an ongoing investigation.

With his arrest, authorities hope to bring justice to the victim and prevent further crimes in the Joliet area.
